He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Howard and Dorothy Athey (Worley). He is survived by: his wife Shirlynn Athey; his sons, Robert Athey (Lori Blann), Douglas Warren (Melissa), Carl Warren, Steven Athey and Joseph Athey (Holly); and his siblings, Gerald Athey (Barbara) and Nancy Schusler (Mark). He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
