He was predeceased by: his parents, Tony Matta and Larreta Frances Thompson Matta; his brothers, Jimmy, Frank and Tony Matta; and his grandson Richard Grant Holmes.

He is survived by: his former wife Sarah Heath; his children, Richard Lloyd Matta of San Diego, CA and Jeanne Holmes of McAllen; and his grandchildren, William L. Holmes IV, Brian C. Holmes and Natalie Faith Holmes.
