He was predeceased by: his parents, Lucio Gaitan and Felipa Gaitan. He is survived by: his wife Socorro Gaitan; his children, Lucio Gaitan (Celia) of Pharr, Cesar Gaitan (Laura) of McAllen, Atanacio Gaitan Jr. (Raquel) of Edinburg, Jaime Gaitan (Ashley) of Penitas, Javier Gaitan (Elvia) of Mission, Fernando Gaitan (Cindy) of McAllen, Victoria Loredo (Robert) of San Juan, Rosa Gomez (Joe) of Edinburg, Sylvia Sepulveda (Joe) of McAllen, Socorro Garza (Pablo) of McAllen and Melissa Chavez (Alejandro) of Edinburg; and his brother Juventino Gaitan of Bakersfield, CA.. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
