He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Dewey and Rosa Atkinson. He is survived by: his wife Barbara; his children, Ruth Hoffman, William, Jean Davis, Jay, David Atkinson and Gina; his grandchildren, Jonathan Davis, Stephanie Davis, John, Natalie Phillips, Gary, Zane Atkinson and Kiera Atkinson; and his great grandchildren, Josh, Katelynn, Heston, Will and Cora.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Franklin and Barbara Atkinson Endowment Fund at East Texas Baptist University or The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Mission.

“I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Atkinson's passing and only wish I had reached out to him before now. On a Sunday night April 1965, Dr. Atkinson was the faithful proclaimer and preached the Gospel. He pointed, what I thought was the longest index finger in the world, straight at me and said "it was for your sins that Jesus died on the cross. But he did it willingly so that you could have eternal life." I made a spontaneous yet life changing decision to accept Christ as my savior. Ronald Kyzar”
