He was predeceased by: his parents, William Simeon Buchanan and Vena Johnson Buchanan; and his siblings, William S Buchanan, Jr., John Lee Buchanan, Alice Jane Buchanan and Virginia Buchanan Matthews.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Boykin Main Buchanan; his son James R. Buchanan, Jr. (Lauren); his stepchildren, Catherine Main Thurman (Eric) and Robert Willis Main, Jr. (Melanie); his grandchildren, Michael Ryan Clark, Reagan Main, Zoe Main, Aquilla Buchanan, Jackson Thurman, Parker Thurman, Griffin Buchanan and Carlyn Buchanan; and his sister Mary Nell Riegel (Allen).
