He is survived by: his children, Fredrick, JD, Julie, Lily Espy and Andrea Spurgeon; his siblings, Lonzell Brown, Linda Harris, Juanita Nwankwo and Tressie Stevenson; his uncle John Simmons; and his aunt Lula Robinson.
