He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Matthys and Marie Matthys; his son Walter John Matthys; his siblings, George Matthys, Marguerite Donsbach, Florence Haugen and Sharron Vogel; his nephew Johnny Matthys; and his niece Tonya Rucker.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Jean Matthys of Leander; his children, Clifford Matthys (Jeri) of Lexington, Jackie Thomas (Scott) of Georgetown and David Matthys (Kathy) of Cedar Park; his grandchildren, Walter Matthys (Suzanne), Dawn Matthys, Sean Thomas, Samantha Guier (Kevin) and Jason Thomas; his great grandchildren, Ryan, Kennedy, Mackenzie, Finn, Eli and Ava; his sisters, Ruby Johnson of San Antonio and Thelma Koehler of Seguin; and his brother-in-law Virgil Vogel of Sequin. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
