He was predeceased by: his parents, Fernando Mendez and Carmen Mendez; his grandson Jason Kory Wilburn; his sisters, Olga Flores and Mary Gutierrez; his niece Melissa Gutierrez; and his nephew Eddie McCoy.
He is survived by: his children, Carmen Sultan, Rosario B. Holmen, Fernando Jesus Mendez II (Allicia), Sonia Alejandra Garza III (Raul), Marco Antonio Lozano (Adriana) and Ashley Nicole Ramirez (Adrian Rodriguez); and his sister Guadalupe "Cupi" McCoy. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, mother of his children as well as other relatives, and friends.
