He was predeceased by: his parents, Hershel Flanery and Hortense Flanery; his daughter-in-law Lydia Stockbridge Flanery; and his grandson Anthony Lynn Flanery. He is survived by: his wife Mary Louise Flanery; his children, Ricky Lynn Flanery, Mark Anthony Flanery (Billie) and Regina Gay Burton (Brent); his brother Leslie Ray Flanery (Becky); and his grandchildren, Alicia Millican (Sean), Daniel Flanery and Makayla Franklin (Coleman). He is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in John's name to the American Heart Association.
