He was predeceased by: his parents, William Lacy Sterling (Jean Sterling) and Lucille Crews (George); his son Kyle Sterling; and his brother Jerry Sterling. He is survived by: his wife Letha McCoy Sterling; his children, Mary McCowen, Emma Wyatt (Lew), Leza Faulkner, Darla Whatley, Terry Sterling, Ashlie Amaya (Marcus) and Eric Nichols; his godson Don Howington; and his siblings, Joseph Sterling, Ida Londo, Sarah Norton, Glenna Weatherly, Sue Nally and Patsy Sterling. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
