He is survived by: his wife June Shell Mengden; his children, Dorthea Eugenia of Walter Henry, Joseph Temple and John Shell; his siblings, Carl Crawford Mengden and Pati Mengden Eckhardt; his grandchildren, Walter IV, Jack, Madeline, Victoria, Daniel, Rachel and Gabrielle; and his nieces and nephews, Susan and Cathy.
