He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard "Ben" Steffensmeier and Rose Umthun Steffensmeier. He is survived by: his wife Colette Lecler; his stepdaughter Michelle Lecler; and his siblings, Paul Steffensmeier (Phyllis) and Annette Nares. He is also survived by 33 nieces and nephews.
He received many awards; in 2010 he received the Parker Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his countless contributions to the advancement of the chiropractic profession.
