He was predeceased by: his parents, Antonio G. Cantu and Maria Elena Cantu; and his siblings, Enrique Martinez (Henry), Tony Cantu, Pete Cantu, Armando Cantu, Nena Durbin and Lupita Hasette.

He is survived by: his wife Maria Cantu; his children, Melissa Cantu-Mitchell (James) of Harlingen, Jenny Cantu of Corpus Christi and Juan Jose Cantu, Jr. (Maricela) of Kingsville; his brother Benny, Sr. (Pearl) of Corpus Christi; and his grandchildren, Jesse Dakota Salinas (Cody), Alexandria Cantu, Austin Salinas, Aaron Mitchell, Josh Mitchell, Juan Gabriel Cantu and Alayna Cantu. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
