He was predeceased by: his mother Tomasa Mendoza; and his sister Andrea Murillo. He is survived by: his children, Jennifer M. Vela of Kingsville and Victor Alaniz of Kingsville; his sisters, Maria G. Reyes of Kingsville and Fane Lerma of Kingsville; and his grandson Ethan Samuel. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
