He was predeceased by: his mother Tommie Merkell; and his son Michael James Cornett. He is survived by: his wife Kathryn Cornett; his daughter Janine Cornett of Houston, Texas; his stepsons, Shawn Thayer of Ardmore, Joshua Thayer of Valley Mills and Brandon Foster of Katy, Texas; and his brothers, Joe Cornett of Topeka and Charlie Cornett of Colorado. He is also survived by seven Step-Grandchildren, and three Step-Great Grandchildren.
