He was predeceased by: his parents, John Shafer and Edith Shafer; his brothers, Richard and Roger Shafer; his sisters-in-law, Gail Shafer and Judy Shafer; and his nephew Scott Shafer.

He is survived by: his wife Catrina Shafer; his children, Cristy Shafer, Shawn Shafer, Whitney Barnett and Joshua Barnett; his grandchildren, Kelly Sage, Kelli Gregg, Jim Gregg, Lindsey Exline (Jerry), Leslie Bennett (Miguel), William Bennett, Kaleb Shafer, Alexis Washburn (Trevor), Aaron Fisher (Shawna), Xiana Luckey, Eviana Luckey and Lynnix Barnett; his great grandchildren, Mailee Jo, Amos, Hudson and Eli; and his brothers, Johnny Shafer and Aladdin Shafer (Susan). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation was held on Sunday, February 16th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Rader Funeral Home (401 N Martin St, Kilgore, TX 75662). A funeral service was held on Monday, February 17th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the St. Luke's Methodist Church (401 E Main St, Kilgore, TX 75662). A burial was held on Monday, February 17th 2025 from 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM at the Danville Cemetery (200 Memorial St, Kilgore, TX 75662).
