Carol Violet Capps Obituary

Carol Violet Capps, known as Violet throughout her life, was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher and friend. She left this life on May 10, 2023 at the age of 79, following a protracted battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born to Samuel Lawrence and Mildred Hatcher on August 16, 1943. She graduated as valedictorian from Irving High School in 1961. She met Arthur Capps while attending the University of North Texas, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Science degree in Education in 1965 and 1969, respectively. After a brief courtship, they married on June 18, 1965. Together, they had two children, Julie and Jonathan. Their marriage spanned the course of 57 years and Arthur remained Violet's dedicated caregiver following her disease diagnosis.

Violet was truly a kind and gentle soul with a deep faith rooted in her belief in Christ. Outside of her interactions with her family, her most significant achievement is the gift of education that she provided to countless children over the course of her 35 year career as an elementary school teacher primarily at J. C. Rugel Elementary School in the Mesquite Independent School District. In 1995, she was awarded the Apple Corp Award in recognition of her dedication to the students she taught. In recognition of the award, she stated "I teach because teachers made a difference in my life. I hope to do the same for my students". Undoubtedly, she achieved her goal through her patient and persevering personality. In addition, she had a deep love of nature demonstrated by her passion for educating her students about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly and her involvement in conservation efforts over the course of her career.

She was proceeded in death by her father and mother, Samuel Lawrence Hatcher and Mildred Alice Flarity Hatcher, her brothers Billy and William, who died in infancy, and brother James Oscar Hatcher. Violet is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband, Arthur Capps; daughter, Julie Capps John and her husband, Gerald John; son, Jonathan Capps and his wife, Yolanda Ramirez Capps; grandsons Collin McGrath and Evan John; sister, Glenda Leon; sister-in-law, Melva Hatcher; niece, Georgiana Newberg; nephews, Sam Hatcher, Andy Leon, and David Leon; and Breeze, her faithful dog who was her dedicated companion.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2023 at the Shiloh Methodist Church located at 556 County Road 1641, Jefferson, Texas. Burial to follow at Shiloh Cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home in Linden. There will be a time of visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the church.

Jason Coffey wrote a sympathy message

“I was fortunate while going to Rugel from kindergarten through 6th grade to have so many wonderful teachers. I was so very fortunate to have Mrs. Capps as my first grade teacher. I have thought of her often, remembering her calm demeanor, kindness and patience. I also remember her lesson on the Monarch butterfly. I can still hear her voice saying my name. Thank you Mrs. Capps for all you did for me and many thousands of kids who were blessed to have met you. May God give strength to your family.”
