He was predeceased by: his parents, Maurice A. Shafer and Fay Manske (Lee); his brother Mark Shafer; and his daughter-in-law Brenda Panici Shafer. He is survived by: his children, Brian Shafer, Theresa Gidali (Brayon), James Shafer and Michael Shafer; his grandchildren, Axl Shafer, Cason Aguillard, Reese Shafer and Brynlee Gidali; his sister Robin Garrett; his niece LeAnne Iglehart; his stepmother Doris Norred; his stepsiblings, Tracy Nolte, Tony Croford, Todd Croford and Tiffany Lightfoot; and his close friend John Lander.
