He was predeceased by: his significant other Olga Merla; his grandparents, Felipe and Maria Merla; and his siblings, Ofelia, Lupita Ibanez, Estanislao Merla and Maggie Puente.
He is survived by: his mother Socorro Ibanez; his children, Joe Merla Jr. (Melanie), Annette Garza (Ruben), Tracy Shaefer (Shon), Belinda Baca (Carlos), Maryann Garza, Pamela Merla, David Merla and Jeanette Mazuera (Donny); and his siblings, Olivia Rios (Rey), Mary Saenz (Rudy), Cayetano Ybanez, Angie Rivera, Lucy Sanchez (Robert), Cleto Ibanez (Janie), Janie Urbina (Ernie) and Gracie Villareal. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
