He was predeceased by: his children, Joseph Mendez and Veronica Mendez Hernandez; his siblings, Manuel Mendez, Paula Longoria, Maria Saldana, Adan Mendez, Eva Zamorano and Herminia Juarez; and his granddaughter Vanessa Garcia.

He is survived by: his wife Maria Del Refugio Mendez; his children, Diana Benavides (Arturo), Maria Magdalena Martinez (Belen), Enedelia Robles (Rodolfo), David Mendez Jr. (Cristina), Valerie Mendez (Arnulfo) and Jennifer Mendez; and his siblings, Emma Rodriguez and Juan Mendez. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
