Gerald Ray Mercer Obituary
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we take this moment in time to celebrate a life well lived by a man well loved. Gerald Ray Mercer was born on October 1, 1933 in Mineral Wells, Texas to Ruby Dulaney and Gerald Patrick Mercer. He passed away on March 16, 2021 in Haltom City. As a young man, Gerald proudly served our country in the Marine Corp.
He was active duty in Korea and Japan. Gerald was always ready to share his stories of life in the military. They were always humorous and entertaining, and he loved telling them as much as we loved hearing them. Most of Gerald's career was spent in sales where he modeled exemplary character and honesty with the customers he served.
He always had a gentle spirit, care for his customers, and a willingness to go above and beyond what was expected. Gerald loved the Lord. It was of utmost importance to him. He served his church in various positions throughout the years but would probably identify most closely with the class he taught at Victory Baptist Church for too many years to count.
There is no way to tell how many lives he led to the Lord or how many young Christians he mentored over the years. The Kingdom of Heaven will be much fuller for his work here on earth. When he arrives in Heaven, there will be much celebrating by those he touched who preceded him into the Kingdom and many more will arrive in the coming years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Dulaney Cleven and Gerald Patrick Mercer; grandson, Ryan Drake; and two great-grandsons, Kamron Melendez and Kyson Arlett. Gerald is survived by his beloved wife of forty years, Priscilla Mercer; children, Janet Andrews and husband, Kevin, Gerald Mercer, Jr. and wife, Tobi, Cheryl May, Tim Mercer, William Norman and wife, Brenda, David Norman, Cindy Baker and husband, Bobby; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; sister, JoAnn Shepherd; brother, James Cleven and wife, Gundy; and much loved nieces and nephews.
In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." And the second commandment is like it, "to love your neighbor as yourself.". To know Gerald was to know his love for God, his love for his family, and his love for those around him.
Gerald's legacy will live on in his family and in the thousands of lives he touched on his journey through this life to the Promised Land.
