He was predeceased by: his parents, Johnnie Bates and Ollie Pearl Lee Bates; his grandparents, James Robert, Sarah Lee and Martha Bates; the mother of his children Beverly Ann Jones; his brother Royce Lee Bates; and his son Phillip Russell Bates.
He is survived by: his wife Freda Thompson Bates of Grand Saline; his children, Brian Gregory Whatley (Jeanna) of Bullard and Mary Christa Bates Sloan (Jared) of Grand Saline; his sisters, Delois Currey of Grand Saline, Charlene Morrison (Ron) of Grand Saline and Beth Gordon of Canton; and his grandchildren, Raiven Whatley, Jarrett Whatley, Slayde Hutcherson and Zayden Sloan. He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.
