He was predeceased by: his parents, Mariano Chavez and Josefina Arredondo Chavez; and his siblings, Teresa Garcia, Raul Chavez, Antonio Chavez and Jesus Chavez.

He is survived by: his wife Irma Chavez of Gonzales; his children, Daisy Garcia (David) of Gonzales, Rosario Cortes (Alvaro) of Gonzales, Andrea Chavez of Gonzales and Rafael Chavez Jr.; his wife Jamie of Seguin; his grandchildren, Eleazar "Ace" Chavez, Elianna Chavez, Ylaina Cortes, Gahbii Gallegos, David Garcia Jr., Carlos Garcia and Julian Garcia; his brother Mariano Chavez Jr of Mexico City; and his half-brothers, Francisco Chavez and Carmelo Chavez.
