He was predeceased by: his parents, Benito and Hortencia Vela, Sr. (Barrera); and his son Heriberto Vela. He is survived by: his wife Maria Luisa Vela; and his children, Rosa Villegas (Joel), Benita Vela, Marco Antonio Vela, Delfa Granados (Mario) and Eberardo (Victoria). He is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and five siblings.
