He was predeceased by: his parents, R. D. "Kiddo" Bates and Nellie Dodd. He is survived by: his children, Tracy Malone, Vicki Varnado (Jason Varnado) and Robert Dodd Bates II; and his grandchildren, Meredith Malone, Jack Malone, Matt Malone and Griffin Varnado.
