He was predeceased by: his parents, Mogono Cantu and Anastacia Cantu; and his sister Mary Tovar. He is survived by: his wife Thomasa Cantu of Floresville; his children, Liberty Castro of Floresville, Linda Diaz of Floresville, Alma Olivarez of Floresville, Nicholas Cantu Jr. (Cindy) of Floresville and Margaret Cantu of Floresville; his sister Rosa Rendon (Valentine) of Floresville; and his brother-in-law Johnny Tovar of San Antonio. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren.
