He was predeceased by: his parents, Clebit Puryear and Viola Honea Puryear; his son Darrell Puryear; his siblings, James, Grady, Harris, Buster, J. B. Puryear, Mamie Lois Conner, Lottie Mae Herron, La Venta Layton, Irene Puryear and Gloria Metcalf; and his brother-in-law Homer Herron.

He is survived by: his wife Rosalenda Diaz Puryear; and his children, Joseph Puryear (Shae), David Puryear (Yolanda) and Ava Denise Puryear. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
