He is survived by: his close friend David Davidson; his son David Whitsell (Jessi Whitsell) of Deport; his grandchildren, Caden Simpson of Detroit and Cayli Whitsell of Deport; his siblings, LaVoyce Sims, Nila Nelson (Larry Nelson), Kenneth Whitsell and Calvin Whitsell; and his former wife Debbie Cummings. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
