He was predeceased by: his parents, Pauline Hopkins (Richardson) and Robert Howell Hopkins Sr.; his stepfather Archie Castleberry; his brother Robert Howell Hopkins Jr.; his son David Morten Hopkins; his stepdaughter Martha Fussell Leavitt; and also Lucy Fox Hopkins.

He is survived by: his wife Jane Reynolds Hopkins; his sister Nancy Hopkins Reily; his children, Laurie Hopkins Dunlap (Carl) and John Edward Hopkins (Houston); his stepdaughter Margie Fussell Garrigues (Bryan); and his grandchildren, Sophia Hopkins, Hannah Dunlap, Carlton Dunlap, Mark Dunlap, Margo Garrigues, Katherine Guerra, Ashley Bryer (Joshua), Madison Leavitt and Dane Leavitt (Rachel).
