John Orrin Trethewey Obituary
John Orrin Trethewey of Cypress, Texas, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on June 6, 2023. He was 89.
John was born to John Orrin Trethewey, Sr. and Pauline Garrett Trethewey on November 22, 1933 in Miami, Arizona. He graduated in 1955 with a BA in history from Baylor University where he met and married the love of his life for the next 68 years, Jeannine Smith Trethewey. Together they raised a daughter, Shannon Van Horn Haas (husband Richard Haas) and a son, John Jeffrey Trethewey (wife Tori Gotthilf Trethewey). His widow, both children and their spouses survive his passing. His memory is also cherished by grandsons John Robert Palmer, Dane Britton Van Horn (wife Sara) and Garrett Paul Trethewey (wife Courtney), and by granddaughter Kelsie Skye Trethewey, as well as by great-grandsons Liam Jansky, Eliel Palmer and Jaxon, Brooks and Bryce Trethewey, and by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by sister Mary Rose Trethewey Bringle (husband Al Bringle, deceased), by sister Pauline Eloise Trethewey MacDuffie (husband Harry MacDuffie, deceased) and by brother Robert Kenneth Trethewey (wife Shirley Teer Trethewey, survives).
Upon graduation from Baylor, John became an officer in the US Navy. He and his young family were stationed at various military bases, including those in southern California, the Washington DC area and in Yokohama, Japan. In 1967, John became a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, from which he retired at the then mandatory retirement age of 55 and spent the next 10 years as a senior security director for Houston Light and Power. He spent the last 45 years of his life as a Harris County resident.
A devout Christian, John possessed a fine tenor voice, which he shared as a church soloist and choir member for many years. He was very active in support of his son Jeff’s baseball pitching career from Little League through college. Above all, he was devoted to his family and to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2 pm on the 6th of July at Windwood Presbyterian Church, 10555 Spring Cypress Road, Houston, Texas, 77070 with a reception to follow at the church. The family requests that no flowers be sent. Any gifts to honor John’s life and memory are instead requested for Samaritan’s Purse Ministry.
