He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlie Cates and Georgia Koym; his stepmother Ina Mae Cates; and his siblings, Charlene Callison and Don Cates.
He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Cates; his children, Yvonne Huff (Michael Huff) of Crothersville, IN, Brian Cates (Beckie Cates) of Angleton, TX and Scot Johnson (Rachel Spillman-Johnson) of Austin, TX; and his sister Pat Sires (Ray Sires) of Waco, TX.. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to South Texas Children's Home.
