He was predeceased by: his father Horace Newton; his daughter Martha Cheryl Hicks; and his siblings, Earl Hicks, Hazel Henserling, Carlton Hicks, Harvey Hicks, Maurine Nixon, Vada Hicks and William Hicks.

He is survived by: his caregiver JoAnn McLain-Hicks; his children, Leslie Keith and Sarah Elizabeth Hicks-Miles; and his siblings, Edman Hicks, Bernice Schupp, Beatrice Hux, Wilbur Hicks and Robert Hicks. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; multiple stepchildren and grandchildren.

He was a friend to everyone, and his charity had no bounds.
