He was predeceased by: his parents, Kemp Crawford Cates and Gladys Cates (McDaniel); his sister Kay Powledge; and his brother-in-law Carl Powledge. He is survived by: his wife Mary Jo Cates of Colleyville; his daughters, Betsy Scogin (Bryant) of Frisco and Kathryn Cates (Matt Kozusko) of Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Carter Scogin of Frisco, Spencer Scogin of Frisco, Tucker Scogin of Frisco and Juniper Cates-Kozusko of Philadelphia; and his nieces, Lynn Clark (Craig) of Plano, Kathy Jones (Randy) of Trinidad and Mary Kay Pfister (Kevin) of Flower Mound.
A graveside service was held on Saturday, February 22nd 2025 at 11:30 AM at the Lexington Cemetery (5900 Co Rd 326, Lexington, TX 78947).
