He was predeceased by: his parents, Roberto Aguilar and Isabela Aguilar; and his siblings, Angie Aguilar, Linda Aguilar Dickerson, Eddie Aguilar and Ernest Aguilar.

He is survived by: his wife Nelda Ortiz Aguilar; his son James Robert Aguilar Jr. (Miriam Aguilar); his grandchildren, Noah James Aguilar, Lashawndra, Myra Kuykendall, Phoenix and Phelix Minnitt; and his siblings, Barbara (David Cortez), Henry (Sonia Aguilar) and Danny (Amanda Aguilar).
