He was predeceased by: his parents, Ranzo Groves and Lenora Groves (Rose); his siblings, Ray Groves, Edith Grisham, Reba Johnson and Bernice Griffin; and his grandsons, Scottie Mayfield and Chase Ezell.

He is survived by: his wife Mertie Groves (Cooper); his children, Reggie Groves, James Samuel Jr (Wanda), Curtis Samuel, Lanny Price (Sandra), Lanna LaFountain (Greg), Lena Wood and Shellie Groves (John); his sister Sandra Rodgers; and his grandsons, James Mayfield, Trey Kirkpatrick, Cooper Ezell, Ryon Wood, Corey Chamberlain, Lain LaFountain and Mason Groves. He is also survived by 17 Grandchildren and 27 Great Grandchildren.
