He was predeceased by: his parents, Nancy Virginia Carter and T. J. Carter; and his grandparents, J. D., Stella Carter, William "Doc" and Edmona Dabney.
He is survived by: his children, Celeste Carter Blackburn (Kelly), Matthew Donald Carter (Melissa), Terrell Carter James (Bryan), Dana Carter Hughes (Sam) and Cody MacJackson Carter-Murphy (Mark); his grandchildren, Thomas Cade Blackburn, Natalie Gail Carter, Meagan Celeste Carter, Hollan Cline Blackburn, Coraline Kathleen James, Piper Kaywin Hughes, Theo Dennis James, Silas William James, Graham Armstrong Hughes and Thomas Wylie Hughes; his siblings, Dr. J. Daniel Carter (Barbara) and Carolyn Carter Bell (Mike); his friend Deborah Boot; his grandson Cade Blackburn; and his nephews, Jason Carter, Chris Bell and Adam Carter. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews.
