He was predeceased by: his parents, Lorenzo Vela and Barbra Vela; his siblings, Domingo, Manuel Vela, Criselda Gonzales and Palmira Puente; and his grandson Jay Vela.
He is survived by: his wife Soveida Vela of Brownfield; and his children, Jimmy (Janie Vela) of Lubbock, Susan Olivan (John) of Dallas, Eloy (Betty Vela) of Brownfield, Mickie Vela and Vickie Vela Marroquin of Brownfield. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
