Karen Waide wrote a sympathy message

“I first met Padre Gerry in 1975 when he was the pastor at Sto Tomas de Castilla in Guatemala and I was a young volunteer from St. Louis. Gerry is simply the finest priest I've ever known. A humble man, a funny man, and a man of God, Gerry didn't just preach the gospel, he lived it every day. He spent much of his life serving the poor and marginalized, giving the rest of us a road map to Heaven. God bless you, your family, and the communities you've served. You are 1 of a kind. Karen Waide”
