He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Purcell and Rosemary Purcell. He is survived by: his wife Melanie Purcell; his children, Emily Edington (Curt), Ruth Sawkins (Phillip), Susan Purcell, Beth Purcell and James Purcell (Nichole); and his grandchildren, Anna Edington, Heidi Edington, Drew Sawkins, Wesley Sawkins, Charlotte Sawkins and Baby Purcell.

“Condolences to all of the Purcell family. Bill was the first roommate I had in Second Squadron at the Air Force Academy our Junior year. First guy I met in the squadron. Best roommate ever! Nothing bothered him which was really unusual at the Academy. He tried to teach me how to spin a basketball on my finger, but I never came close to accomplishing that feat. One of the nicest and calmest individuals I've ever known. I talked to him about ten days before his passing and he was calm.”
