He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis Wilkes and Elizabeth Wilkes; his son Michael Wilkes; and his brother Louis Wilkes. He is survived by: his former wife Betty LaRhue; his wife Betty Wilkes of Bellville; and his children, Laura Wilkes of Graham, Linda Williams (Ron) of Mesquite, Amy Shubert of Graham, David Birdwell of Bellville, Mark Birdwell of The Woodlands and Gary Birdwell (Lisa) of The Woodlands. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and dear friends.
