Dorothy Jean Cason Obituary
Dorothy Jean Walker Cason passed away peacefully at Hendrick Hospice Center, Abilene, Texas July 18, 2024. She was born October 30, 1924 in San Saba County and was the second daughter born to John Terry Walker, Sr. and Mattie Maud Brown Walker.
Dot, as she was called by her family, attended schools at Pecan Grove in San Saba County, Encino, New Mexico and Arkinda, Arkansas before moving back to Brownwood, Texas with her family. She also received her PHT degree from Texas A&M University, Bryan, Texas. At age 16, Dot went to work at the Harvey House along the Santa Fe Railroad, owned by Fred Harvey, in Brownwood, Texas. Her first job was to keep water glassed filled for the guests which consisted of soldiers from World War II at Camp Bowie in Brownwood and Soldiers coming by train and also served the residents of Brown County.
In the Spring of 1947, Dot and her sister Reva attended a USO show where she met the love of her life, Billie (Bill) Cason from Bangs, Texas. December 28, 1947, on a Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM in a double ring ceremony, Bill and Dorothy were married by the Reverend Lloyd Gentry from Rocky Creek Baptist Church in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Coppic in Bangs, Texas. They were married 56 years.
In 1961 after moving to Baird, Dorothy and her family joined First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught the beginner Sunday School class for about 26 years and was also involved in other activities and functions of the church.
Dorothy loved her family and loved spoiling all her grandchildren. She loved playing games, especially dominos, with the game of 42 being her favorite, and loved hosting New Year Eve parties.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Reba Walker Jolley Stutts from Santa Fe, Texas and Son-In-Law, Jerry Barron, Baird, Texas.
She is survived by her three daughters, Linda Cason Barron of Baird, Texas, Beverly Cason (Charlie Tubbs) of Moran, Texas, and Billie Jo Cason Hammett (Rick) of Weatherford, Texas; one brother John Terry walker, Jr. (JoAnn) of Richmond, Texas; Grandchildren Renea Barron Stearns (Brian) of Brownwood, Texas, Ben Barron (Julie) of Lewiston, Idaho, Nikki Jo Vickers Kelton of Austin, Texas, Gretchen Vickers Johnson (Willard) of Cisco, Texas, Clay Vickers (Amy) of Weatherford, Texas; Numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be Saturday, July 27. 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Parker-Jacobs Funeral Home. Services will be Sunday, July 28, 2024 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Baird followed by burial at Rocky Creek Cemetery at 4:00 PM in Brownwood, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church in Baird, Meals of Wheels in Baird, or Hendrick Hospice Care.
