He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe Merritt and Clara Lee Beasley; and his siblings, Joe Merritt, Robert Griggs, Sherrie Carroll and Elizabeth Attebury.
He is survived by: his wife Laverne; his son Richard Merritt; his daughter-in-law Carla Merritt; his daughter Deana Merritt; his grandchildren, Ryan Merritt and Ashley Merritt; his sisters, Arlene Ringener, Sandi Rodgers and Marilyn Merritt; and his brothers-in-law, Ron Rodgers, Don Ringener, Richard Carroll and Pat Attebury. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
