He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth Elam and Betty Wade Elam; his son Derek Elam; and his brother Darrell Elam. He is survived by: his wife Debbie "Deb" Elam; his children, Stephen Merritt (Jennifer) and Amanda Merritt (Erika); and his uncle Arlo Elam (Claudette). He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.
