He was predeceased by: his parents, Homer Ellis Kirkland and Johnnie Flippo (Partain); his stepfather Henry Thomas Flippo; and his siblings, Winston Kirkland, Jo Ophard Hogan and Barbara Duncan (Flippo).
He is survived by: his wife Jeannine Kirkland of Athens; his sons, James Robert Kirkland of Los Angelas, William Chesley "Chet" Kirkland (Joy) of Nashville, Jeff Kirkland of Mt. Pleasant, Curtis Pickle of Athens, Doug Pickle (Krista) of Galena and Wayne Pickle (Kathy) of Athens; his siblings, Charles Henry Flippo of Eustace, Mary Jo Norvell (Brad) of Huntsville and Earnest Flippo (Donna) of Heber Springs, Arkansas; and his grandchildren, Jeffrey "Will" Kirkland (Rachel), Katy Beth Kirkland, Chesley Kirkland, Lainey Kirkland, Sammy Pickle (Shonea), Butch Pickle (Cindy), Stephanie Kessler (John), Cassie Pickle, Lauren Pickle and Weston Pickle. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
