He was predeceased by: his parents, Estelle Imadell Fletcher and Lloyd Earl Shaffer. He is survived by: his son Brian Sawyer Shaffer; and his granddaughters, Cheryl and Sarahbeall. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the MD Anderson Center in Houston for cancer research are appreciated.
