He was predeceased by: his parents, Lula Belle Holmes and William Donald Yates; and his siblings, Lucille Sides, Dorothy Crowell and Donald Ray Yates.
He is survived by: his sons, John Yates (Laura), William Andy Yates (Jinhee) and Sean Powell (Sydney); his grandchildren, Kitty Parker Yates, Robert Maclain Yates, Campbell Wallace Yates, Riley Wayne Powell and Shane Steven Powell; his nephews, David Yates (Aida), Dennis Yates, Donald Sides, Billy Crowell and Richard Crowell; his niece Nicki Sides; and his partner Leslie Craigen. He is also survived by many other relatives and close friends.
