He was predeceased by: his mother Patricia "Pat" Coates; his grandparents, Bunny, Florence Roy Singleton and Mary Coates; his brother LeRoy Coates; and his brother-in-law Perry Petitt.

He is survived by: his father LeRoy Coates of Anahuac; his wife Barbara of Anahuac; his son Dustin (Chaneen) of Houston; his siblings, Debra Coates Petitt of Kendall, TX and Vernon (Janna) of Anahuac; his grandson Carter Coates of Houston; his nephews, Jarod Moore (Darryl) of Houston, Jeremy (Nikita) and Jermichael of Anahuac; and his close friends, Lynsey "Bull" Randal and Jackie Wilkerson. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
