He is survived by: his wife Jennifer Ortega; his daughters, Alejandra Ortega and Samantha; his son-in-law Daniel Soest; his stepsons, Keller and Isaac; and his grandchildren, Adam Samuel-Lee "Bugs", Eva Lucinda and Joseph Anthony.

“We ran around together as kids back in the west side of New Braunfels. Grew up in the same neighborhood and went to school at NBHS. Sammy was a kind hearted person, and always spirited and cheerful. He had so many wonderful qualities. I just found out today that he passed away last year this month. His parents raised Sammy right. He will forever be my best man as he was back in 1979 when I married. Rest In Peace my friend. Thanks for always being there🙂”
