He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Smithwick and Aurora Saenz Smithwick; and his siblings, Jamie Smithwick, Barbara Smithwick Pruneda and Robert "Bobby" Smithwick.

He is survived by: his wife Helen Ramon Smithwick; his daughter Ashley Smithwick Bernal (Jose); his grandchildren, Liam Robert-Cooper Smithwick, Bailee Nichole Bernal, Jose Bernal, Jr., Maliyah Bernal and Dominic Bernal; his great grandchild Matthew James Bernal; his brothers, David Smithwick (Mellie) and Daryl Smithwick; and his siblings-in-law, Velma Smithwick and Jose Pruneda.
