He was predeceased by: his parents, Etta Mae Swonger and Harry G. Swonger; his wife Barbara Jean Pope of Uvalde; his stepfather Bob Roberts; and his daughter-in-law Joy Swonger. He is also survived by his four children and their spouses.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project and St. James United Methodist Church of Abilene.
